GEORGE TOWN, Sept 3- The Penang Umno Liaison Committee has passed a resolution calling for the posts of party president and deputy president not to be contested at the party’s polls in October.

“All 13 Umno division heads unanimously feel that the prime minister and his deputy are most qualified to continue to lead the party to make it even stronger,” he told reporters after chairing the state Umno liaison committee meeting here, on Monday.

In the pursuit of strengthening the party, he said the top two posts should not be contested.

Zainal Abidin said the committee also appointed Bukit Mertajam Umno division head Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir as secretary to replace former Penaga assemblyman Datuk Azhar Ibrahim.

Pinang Tunggal assemblyman Datuk Roslan Saidin was appointed treasurer, replacing former minister in the prime minister’s department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop while Member of Parliament for Gelugor Shahbudin Yahya as information chief, replacing Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Hilmi Yahya who is now deputy Penang Umno liaison committee chairman.

Zainal Abidin said several Umno division heads would not defend their posts to make way for newcomers.
