GK.VasanNew Delhi, November 4 – Former Union minister and senior Congress leader from Tamil Nadu, G.K. Vasan, quit the party on Monday, thereby splitting the beleaguered party in the state. Vasan said he will be announcing a new party soon.

“I have heard the unanimous opinion of the cadre. We will set a new political path in the footsteps of Kamaraj. The young people in Tamil Nadu are looking for new leadership,” Vasan said at a press conference also attended by three Congress MLAs in Chennai.

Vasan said he plans to hold a rally in Trichy district soon and announce the name of his party. “I’m deeply worried about the Congress in Tamil Nadu which has not been in power in the state for the last 47 years,” the former Union shipping minister said.

In the last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress faced its worst drubbing ever in Tamil Nadu where it could not win a single seat. With a tally of just 44 seats, the party was even denied the Leader of Opposition post.

In 1996, Vasan’s father G.K. Moopanar floated Tamil Maanila Congress, which later merged with the Congress in 2002. There are also reports of a planned revival of the party in Tamil Nadu, which will vote for its next government in 2016.
