2644KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18- Self-employed workers are encouraged to join the 1Malaysia Retirement Scheme (1MRS) to enjoy the same benefit of 6.15 per cent dividend given to normal Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors. Gerakan’s Economic Bureau chief, Datuk Mah Siew Keong said this was to safeguard the future of self-employed individuals such as hawkers, farmers, fishermen and even housewives.

“This scheme is to provide relief for the above said group so that they too can enjoy their golden years in peace,” he said in a statement today.

Mah said under the supervision of EPF, the 1MRS that was launched in 2010 only required contributors to pay a minimum of RM50 per month.  He said through prudent and wise investment, EPF could provide a dividend
rate higher than most financial institutions in the country which offered an average of 3 per cent interest to their fixed deposit savings. The high dividend rate of 6.15 per cent from EPF for the year 2012 that was announced yesterday has brought praise from many quarters including Gerakan.
