PEKAN, April 25- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said today the fact that the parties of the opposition pact had varying positions on policies showed that they did not have the credibility to administer the country.
The prime minister said they differed from the Barisan Nasional (BN) parties which had an understanding in matters involving policies and, as such, instilled confidence in the people to support the coalition.
“We can have differences of opinion but we cannot be confrontational in matters concerning policies. In the BN, we do not differ in terms of the country’s major, fundamental policies. We have an understanding. There is consensus in the BN, but not in the opposition pact.
“Their positions (on policies) show that they have no credibility. We must have trust and credibility, only then will the people support us,” he said at a breakfast meeting with the people at the Ketapang polling district centre near here.
Najib said one glaring weakness in the opposition pact was the disagreement over the implementation of the ‘hudud’ (Islamic penal law), with PAS all for it and the DAP against it.
PAS deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din had reportedly said that the party would implement hudud if the opposition pact won the 13th General Election, despite opposition from the DAP, one of its two allies in the pact. The other is PKR.
Najib said he wondered how the opposition parties could administer Malaysia, where decisions had to be made on the direction the country had to take as well as its future, when they could not even come to an understanding on the question of hudud.
“Surely they have no credibility to win the trust of the people. They are always making conflicting statements,” he said.
Najib, who is also BN chairman, said the fact that candidates of the opposition pact parties were contesting against one another in seven seats in this general election showed absence of an understanding.
He said this indicated that the opposition was in a state of confusion in many matters.
Najib urged the people of the Pekan parliamentary constituency, of which he has been the MP since 1976, to continue to support him so that he could implement more development, including complex projects, for their benefit.
He said Pekan had transformed with the implementation of various projects, among them integrated housing in every state constituency within it, a rock melon farm and the Sultan Abu Bakar Museum, and showed that the constituency was
undergoing intensive growth.
Pekan constituents also benefited from the 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) enjoyed by the people in the rest of the country and they also received various other aid, including from the Rahah Foundation named after his mother.
“The journey continues. We have not reached the end yet in taking care of the people’s needs and bringing more intensive development to Pekan.
“This election is a test for me. I have implemented what I promised, and the voters of Pekan recognise what the government and I have done for them,” he said.
Also present at the event were the BN candidates for the Peramu Jaya and Bebar state seats in the Pekan parliamentary constituency, namely Datuk Sh Mohmed Puzi Sh Ali and Mohd Fakhruddin Mohd Arif, respectively.
