Lim Kit SiangJOHOR BARU: DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, a voter at Tanjung parliamentary constituency and Komtar state constituency, is not returning to Penang to cast his ballots today.

Instead, the DAP strongman and Gelang Patah hopeful has opted to stay put in Johor on polling day and observe the situations at the many polling stations in Gelang Patah, Kit Siang’s aide Lim Swee Kuan told FMT.

He said Kit Siang has cited the long distance as the reason behind the latter’s decision to remain in Johor Baru.

“There are more important matters at hands, he wants to focus on Johor,” the aide said.

Kit Siang has visited six polling stations in Gelang Patah since this morning, to the surprise of many voters who immediately asked to shake his hands and request for his signature.

“The response was positive, very encouraging,” he told reporters later.

Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar hopeful Khaled Nordin (Barisan Nasional) said he is confident that the voters will make a right choice today, when met after casting his votes at SMK Taman Molek today.

He said this is the first time he is not voting for himself in the Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency after he shifted to contest in the neighbouring Permas state seat.

Returning officer at SMK Taman Molek, Mai Munah Hassan, told FMT that of the 2,938 voters that are supposed to vote at her polling stations, 1,958 of them have cast ballots by noon.

There are about 1.6 million eligible voters in Johor, of whom Malays make up 53.7%, Chinese 38.53%, Indian 6.54% and others 0.92%.

The general election is a crucial test on whether Johor could remain a BN stronghold or whether Pakatan could make significant inroads.
