Tehran, March 3 – Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called for expansion of relations with Iran in all spheres during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in New Delhi on Friday.
Their talk featured the most recent developments in bilateral relations and regional issues, Iran’s Mehr News Agency (MNA) reported.
Cooperation between the two countries is necessary for curbing extremism and violence in the region, Zarif said at the meeting.
While in New Dehli, the Iranian foreign minister also met with Indian Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari on Friday.
In their meeting, Zarif discussed the Iranian government’s approach toward bilateral, regional and international relations.
He expressed hope to see increased collaboration in the political, cultural and economic spheres, and stressed the need to eliminate all obstacles to developing closer ties.
On his part, Ansari said Iran plays a strategic role in the region’s security and emphasised the need to expand bilateral ties.
Zarif began a two-day official visit to India at the invitation of Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid on Thursday.
