New Delhi, September 27 – Apple on Friday responded to reports of iPhone 6 Plus bending in people’s pockets, saying that the issues were rare and were not linked to flaw in its device. It said that so far it has found only 9 instances of bent iPhones.
“With normal use, a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in an email to Reuters.
More significantly, the company gave select journalists and bloggers a quick tour of its secret testing facility, showing them the tools and methods it used to test the rigidity and durability of iPhones. According to Recode, a technology news website, Apple talked about the following four specific tests it carries out on iPhones to ensure they are rigid and durable:
Sit test: In this test, an equipment simulate a person sitting on a hard surface, on a soft surfaces like a couch and on hard surface at an angle while keeping the iPhone in the back pocket.
Three-point bend test: In this test pressure is applied on iPhone in a bit to twist its body.
The pressure-point test: Pressure is applied on single point on the iPhone body in a bid to bend it.
The torsion test: The iPhone is held from both sides and then twisted at various angles to test its structural rigidity.
Apple also said that iPhones use premium-grade aluminium and toughest glass in the industry in its body. Earlier reports surfaced that the iPhone 6 Plus was susceptible to bending if kept in a pocket in a pair of tight pants.
