MAPUTO, May 11- Indian company Jindal Steel and Power has made its first coal export shipment from its mine in Changara district in western Mozambican province of Tete.
On Wednesday, the ore carrier Maori Maiden left Beira port headed for India laden with 36,600 tonnes of coal.
According to Jindal-Mozambique director Manoj Gupta, the company plans to export about a million tonnes of thermal and coking coal this year. Gupta told Mozambican daily newspaper Noticias that the company planned to export another shipment of coal in June.
Jindal has been sending between 15 and 20 trucks each day to the coal terminal at Beira, located more than 600 kilometres away from the mine, where 463,400 tonnes of coal at Beira is awaiting shipment.
In order to cut costs and increase security, Jindal plans to begin transporting the coal to the port by rail beginning June or July.
The company plans to produce ten million tonnes of coal per annum.
