Anwar is opposition leader in Parliament

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was today reappointed as the opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat for the 13th Parliament.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia, who announced the reappointment, said Anwar, who is the Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh, was appointed under Standing Order 4A (3).

anwar“Based on the feedback I received, I am satisfied that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim received the unanimous support of the opposition Members of Parliament in the Dewan Rakyat for the post of opposition leader,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here.

Anwar was appointed as the opposition leader for the first time in the 12th Parliament after winning the by-election for the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary seat in 2008.

DAP advisor, Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah), had stated one day after the13th general election (GE13) that the opposition had agreed to retain Anwar as the opposition leader in the Dewan Rakyat although the DAP had won more Parliamentary seats compared to the other parties in the opposition pact.

Following the GE13, the opposition pact won 89 of the 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat of which, the DAP had 38 seats, PKR (30) and PAS (21).
