Melaka, November 11- The MIC has set a target of 700,000 members from 400,000 at present before the 14th general election in an effort to strengthen the party, said its president, Datuk Seri G.Palanivel.
He said new members would also be encouraged to register as voters and to date over 300,000 members had registered as voters.
A committee will be formed at the divisional level to create a mechanism to entice the Indian community to join the MIC, he told reporters after opening the 66th/67th Melaka MIC Convention here Sunday.
He said the membership drive would be intensified at the branch level.
He said the MIC constitution would be amended to pave the way for state party chiefs to be elected instead being appointed by the top leadership.
“State party chiefs were chosen by branch chiefs and committee members when MIC was helmed by Tun V.T Sambathan,” he said, adding that the amendment would be tabled at the MIC extraordinary general meeting next year.
