Chennai, Dec 4 – Some 160 sea pirates from various countries continue to remain in Indian jails as their governments have not made any efforts for their return.

A senior naval official said the pirates hailing mainly from Seychelles and Kenya were arrested by the Indian Navy in the Gulf of Aden, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

“We don’t know what to do with these arrested pirates. Countries like Seychelles, Kenya and others have refused to take them back as their prisons are full,” said Naval Officer In-Charge (Tamil Nadu and Puducherry) Commodore Amar K Mahadevan on Tuesday.

Mahadevan said a proposal has been made to have armed guards in merchant ships while sailing along the Gulf of Aden.

The Indian Navy has been guarding sea traffic around its borders and escorted over 2,600 ships including 300 from India through the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) since 2008.
