New Delhi, Dec 19 – A total of 725 communal incidents were reported in India in the first ten months of the year with 143 deaths and 1,978 people injured, the upper house of parliament heard Wednesday.
Union Minister of State for Home RPN Singh said northern state of Uttar Pradesh tops the list with 250 incidents that left 95 people dead and 313 others injured, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
“Details of the extent of property damage and people rendered homeless in the incidents are not maintained centrally,” the minister said in his written reply.
Central state of Madhya Pradesh has the second highest number of communal incidents with 70 cases resulting in eight deaths and 225 people injured.
Western Maharashtra state saw 64 such incidents in which 11 people lost their lives while 285 were injured.
Gujarat and Karnataka witnessed 61 communal incidents each, with seven deaths in the western state and one in the southern state.
Northeastern states of Sikkim, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland reported no communal incidents this year
