SHAH ALAM, Feb 9 — The resignation of Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) Kajang assemblyman without a reasonableSaravanan-Slider reason has clearly belittled the trust of the constituents in the area, said MIC vice-president Datuk M.Saravanan.

In the 13th general election, the voters had not only chosen the candidate but also gave PKR an opportunity but the party has ignored them through the resignation of its representative without good reason.

So, it’s time for the people to convey a clear message not to take their mandate for granted,” he told reporters after opening the 4th Malaysian Tamil Kapagam Delegates Conference here today.

The Kajang state seat was vacated after its assemblyman, Lee Chin Cheh resigned on Jan 27, and opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was named as the party’s candidate for the by-election.

According to Saravanan, who is Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, a by-election could only be called when a representative died or became ill and incapable of discharging his or her responsibility.

He said the MIC was prepared to face the by-election and would draw up strategies to gain the voters’ trust as soon as the Barisan Nasional announced its candidate.

On a separate development, Saravanan, who is the founder of the New Affirmative Action Movement (NAAM) foundation and Tapah member of parliament, said its economic development programmes for Indian youths also received support from other races.

He said as such the foundation planned to introduce the programme to other races in his constituency as well.
