NEW DELHI, Aug 22- India is building its first indigenous nuclear submarine at Visakhapatnam port in southern state of Andhra Pradesh, Xinhua news agency reports citing local media.
The INS Arihant is the first of a class of three nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines with a displacement of 6,000 tonnes, said NDTV news channel.
It is designed to carry four nuclear-tipped submarine-launched ballistic missiles called K-4 which have a range of 3,500 kilometres.
India currently operates the Russian made INS Chakra nuclear submarine.
