sonyNew Delhi, September 4 – Like Samsung, Sony on Tuesday announced a litany of products at IFA in Berlin. It launched its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z3, the relatively diminutive Z3 compact and the Xperia Z3 tablet. However, all three products offer only incremental update over their predecessors.

The Xperia Z3 has a more ergonomic design with rounded corners compared to the boxy design of the Xperia Z2. But the core hardware remains largely the same. The Z3 packs in a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, which is slightly faster than the one found in the Z2.

It has 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage with support for microSD card. Like its predecessor, it is also water and dust resistant with IP65/68 certifications. The Z3 is also 11grams lighter and 1mm thinner than the Z2. This means it is dramatically thinner at 7.4mm.

The bigger deal out here is the 5.2-inch 1080p screen. Yes, it’s the same size and the resolution as the Z2, but now, Sony claims it is the world’s brightest display amongst all the leading premium smartphones. This is a big claim and only time will tell if it is true.

Another improvement is the camera. Again, it has the same 20.7-megapixel resolution, but now Sony has increased its ISO sensitivity to 12,800, which may give it an edge in low-light conditions, and there is a new 25mm lens. It also shoots video in 4K resolution.

But the device still lacks optical image stabilisation, a feature found in many other high-end smartphones. The Z3 also comes with an enhanced audio experience. It has DSEE HX audio up-scaling technology to improve the quality of compressed music and it cuts ambient noise using a digital noise cancelling technology.

Xperia-Z3There’s also a new PlayStation 4 remote play app which allows the user to use the phone as a remote screen to play games. Sony claims that with typical use, the battery in the Z3 will last two days. Like most new phones, it runs on Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Z3 compact, is largely the same as the Z3 in terms of hardware specifications. The major difference is in screen. The compact has a 4.6-inch screen with 720P resolution. It’s battery is also smaller.

Compared to the Z1 Compact, its predecessor, it is 9 per cent thinner and 6 per cent lighter. It also has a faster quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor,  and a larger 2,600mAh battery. It also shares the same software as the Z3.

The Xperia Z3 tablet is perhaps the thinnest tablet in the world at 6.4mm and it weighs 270 grams. Like the Z3 and Z3 Compact, it has a IP 65/68 certification for water and dust resistance. It’s powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 CPU, 3GB RAM and 16GB internal memory. Extra internal storage can be added through a microSD card.

The tablet has a 8-inch 1080P Triluminos display. On the back it has a 8.1-megapixel camera and a 4,500mAh battery, while there’s a 2.1-megapixel camera on the front. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat.
