KUALA LUMPUR, March 9 — A 67-year-old security guard shot dead one of four robbers who used a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) to thrice ram a money changer’s outlet in the parking lot of a hypermarket in Cheras here today.

Mohanraj Raman, 30, who was armed with a machete died on the spot in the incident about 11am, at the AEON Hypermarket in Taman Maluri. Mohanraj, from Coalfield Estate, Sungai Buloh, sustained a gunshot wound in the chest.

He said the money-changer outlet was badly damaged in the incident when the robbers wearing full-face helmet rammed into it with the MPV, believed to have been stolen in Jinjang last year.

“During the robbery, a security guard attached to the nearby Poh Kong Jewellers was patrolling in the vicinity of the money-changer’s rushed to the outlet upon being alerted, only to see a robber threatening a staff with a machete.

“The security guard fired three shots in the direction of the robber, one of which hit him in the chest, killing him instantly,” he told reporters at the scene of the robbery.

Zainuddin said the deceased was on the police wanted list for a series of car-jackings, adding that the body was sent to the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital.

He said the police, who seized two machetes from the scene of the crime were in the midst of tracking down the three robbers.

Zainuddin said initial investigations revealed the same gang had robbed the money-changer outlet in July last year, based on the modus operandi used by the robbers.
