PUTRAJAYA – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail created history again – as the first woman to chair a meeting of the cabinet.
She chaired the weekly cabinet meeting at the Perdana Putra building today in the absence of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is in New York to attend the 73rd United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting started at 9.30 am and ended two hours later.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Women, Family and Community Development Minister, shared the historic moment on her official Twitter account, @drwanazizah, with the hashtag #WomenPower: Sejarah tercipta, pertamakali dalam sejarah Malaysia wanita mempengerusikan mesyuarat kabinet. (History created, for the first time in Malaysian history a woman chairs the cabinet meeting).
She uploaded a photograph taken with several ministers including Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng; Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik and Rural Development Minister Rina Harun as well as the Chief Secretary to the Government, Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Bakar.
Dr Wan Azizah had created history when she became the first woman to be appointed as the deputy prime minister after the Pakatan Harapan coalition won the 14th general election in May.
After the cabinet meeting, Dr Wan Azizah flew to Vietnam to represent the Malaysian government at the funeral of President Tran Dai Quang scheduled for 3.30 pm tomorrow.
President Quang died in Hanoi on Sept 21. He was 62.
