Indian PM Modi’s virtual attendance at ASEAN-India summit

The following is the Press release issued by the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur

Prime Minister Hon’ble Shri Narendra Modi virtually attended the 22nd ASEAN – India Summit on 26 October, 2025. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar represented Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the 20th East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur on 27 October, 2025.

On the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and related Summit meetings, H.E. Dr Jaishankar met with Foreign Minister of Malaysia H.E Mr. Mohamad Hasan.

In this context, following initiatives would be implemented to further strengthen the people-to-people ties between India and Malaysia, and also to promote the ongoing academic and cultural engagements between the two countries:

(i) Registration of Indian-origin Malaysian nationals as Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) to be now extended up to sixth generation of descendants of Persons of Indian Origin. The procedures being adopted to establish the ‘Indian Origin’ have been further revised for Malaysian applicants.

(ii) The corpus of the Indian Scholarship and Trust Fund (ISTF) to be augmented by additional Ringgit Malaysia (RM) 3 million. The ISTF provides annual one-time financial support to students from financially weaker families of the Malaysian Indian community.

(iii) In pursuance of the decision to establish the Thiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies at the Universiti Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi during the visit of Hon’ble Mr. Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia to India in 2024, Prof. A. Chellaperumal has joined at the UM as ICCR’s inaugural Thiruvalluvar Chair of Indian Studies earlier this month. Prof. A. Chellaperumal is a distinguished academic and anthropologist with over three decades of teaching, research, and administrative experience.
