PUTRAJAYA, July 25- Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Umno needs to be continuously strengthened as the struggle to make it stronger will never end.
The Prime Minister said there were still many challenges that will come in the way of Umno as the party the Malays rely on.
“Bigger challenges await us. Out struggle is not over. We need to strengthen Umno further because Umno is the backbone and party that brings hope for the Malays,” he said.
Najib said this at a breaking of the fast event that he and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor hosted for friends, Umno division heads of the party’s Puteri, Pemuda dan Wanita wings at his official residence Seri Perdana here Wednesday night.
He said he also hoped that Umno polls which would be held soon would proceed smoothly. At the same event, Najib also celebrated his 60th birthday by a cutting a “pulut kuning” cake (made out of yellow-coloured glutinous rice) together with Rosmah and family members.
The Prime Minister also received a number of cakes contributed by various quarters.
“My thanks to all for being present here today especially my network of friends from the time I was Umno Youth head. We are all now much older but at least reunite once a year and this time in conjunction with my birthday which was yesterday.
“My age is not a secret and is public knowldge. What is more meaningful is our friendship has never faded and lasts till this day,” he said.
More than 2,000 guests attended the event including a group of orphans who were given Aidilfitri gifts by the Prime Minister.
Najib also performed the tarawih prayers with the guests.
