New Delhi, February 7- The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Delhi Police to withdraw its personnel from VIP security duties and deploy them for safety of women in the city.
The direction came after the Delhi Police said in the Supreme Court that it deploys thousands of personnel for security of judges and others.After hearing police’s arguments, the apex court said that most of these personnel could be deployed for better purposes, including making the city roads safer for women.
The apex court has also given states time till February 11 to file affidavits on deployment of policemen for VIP security. The apex court said that if states do not file their replies by Monday, their home secretaries would have to appear personally before it on February 16.The landmark order from the apex court comes in the wake of December 16 gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student in Delhi.
