KOTA TINGGI, Aug 13 – The owner of a holiday resort in Sedili Besar, here, has been remanded for four days from today to assist in the investigation into the case of allowing the resort’s surau to be used for a Buddhist religious activity.
The remand order was issued before court registrar Hairul Azhar Mohamad in the Sessions Court, here, today.
The 45-year-old man is being investigated under Section 295 for allegedly injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class.
The offence is punishable with a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both.
The man arrived at the court at 9.30am accompanied by four policemen and kept his head bent down while being taken in and out of the court premises.
While leaving the court premises, a local resident who was present shouted at the suspect.
“This is the person (responsible). Stupid. He came here and created that problem,” the resident said before he was reprimanded by the police.
Last Saturday, furore broke out in the fishing village of Sedili Besar after the surau built at the resort was used for a prayer session by a group of Buddhists and the incident was discovered by a visitor who wanted to perform his Asar prayers at the surau.
