SIBU, Aug 15 – The Election Court here will make its ruling on the Sarikei P.208 parliamentary seat election petition on Sept 5 next month.
Presiding Eletion Judge Chew Soo Ho made the decision today.
He said this was to allow time for the petitioner’s counsel David Kuok to reply to submissions made by the respondent’s lawyer Chong Siew Chang and to cover new points not raised in the petition.
The petition is filed by Barisan Nasional candidate Ding Kuong Hiing who was defeated by DAP’s Wong Ling Biu in the May 5 general election recently.
Wong won with a majority of 505 votes when he obtained 14,263 votes against Ding’s 13,758.
Ding later filed a petition under Section 10(a),(c),(d),(e)and (f), Section 11(1)(b), Section 32(a), 34(c),35(a) and (b) and Section 36 of the Election Offences Act 1954 in seeking to nullify the result.
In his petition, Ding named returning officer Alex Liau, the Malaysian Election Commission and Wong as the first, second and third respondents respectively.
