YANGON, Sept 20 – Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Friday left for her first visit to Singapore at the invitation of the Singaporean government, Xinhua news agency reported.
Suu Kyi’s visit came two days after returning from a five-day European trip to Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. She visited the United States and South Korea in January this year.
Suu Kyi, a parliamentarian and chairperson of National League for Democracy (NLD), will spend five days in Singapore during which she will attend the Singapore Summit where she will deliver a speech on Myanmar’s transition.
She will also meet Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Parliament Speaker Halimah Yacob, and Grace Fu, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Environment and Water resources and Second Minister for Foreign Affairs.
Suu Kyi’s other planned activities include a visit to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, giving a lecture at the Singapore Management University and meeting the Myanmar community at the Resort World Sentosa.
In April this year, Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam paid a state visit to Myanmar and met Suu Kyi and other government leaders.
