Hanoi, Oct 17 – Typhoon Nari killed at least nine and injured 76 others in Vietnam’s central coastal provinces on Wednesday, the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention said Thursday.
Xinhua news agency reports six people remain missing and property loss is estimated at 1.5 trillion VND (US$71 million).
Storm damaged at least 12,000 homes in Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces. More than 350 hectares of paddy fields and 3,284 hectares of crops were flooded, while 77 fishing vessels were sunk or broken.
Rainfalls of between 200 to 400mm were recorded from central Quang Binh to Quang Ngai provinces and in the Central Highlands region, causing water levels in rivers to increase and resulting in floods in low areas.
Many reservoirs are now at risk of overflowing, with 13 units run by hydro-power plants discharging the overflow. Typhoon Nari made a landfall in Vietnam’s central coastal provinces late Monday night and devastated the region until Wednesday morning.The typhoon was the 11th storm to hit the country this year.
