KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30- Malaysia welcomes the long-term ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestine, brokered by Egypt on Aug 26, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.
He said Malaysia hoped that the ceasefire agreement would enable Israel and Palestine to resume direct negotiations to ensure lasting peace in the region.
“We hope that this long-term ceasefire will pave the way for negotiating a permanent solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict,” he said in a statement, here Saturday.
Anifah added Malaysia had always maintained that violence was never the answer to any conflict and only through negotiations and diplomacy could peace be achieved.
More than 2,100 people, mostly civilians, including 495 children, have been killed in Gaza following Israeli attacks beginning July 8.
