A public debate about race bias in Hollywood erupted after few non-Caucasian artists were nominated for the awards, and none at all for acting prizes, for the second year running.

Several prominent African-American actors and directors announced they would skip the Oscars in protest, including Will and Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee.

African-American comic Chris Rock will host the ceremony, and is expected to make the race controversy a theme of the event.

The Oscars are presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Academy’s approximately 6,200 voting members choose winners in 24 categories.

The ceremony at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre will begin at 5:30 pm Sunday (0130 Monday GMT). The US television network ABC will broadcast the event.
