Penang yang Di-Pertua Negeri takes oath for fifth term

GEORGE TOWN, April 2 – Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Abdul  Rahman Abbas took his oath of office for a fifth two-year term, which is effective from May 1, at Dewan Seri Mutiara, here, today. He was accompanied by his wife Toh Puan Majimor Shariff to the ceremony. Abdul Rahman, 75, was first appointed to the Yang di-Pertua Negeri post on May 1, 2001.

He was born on April 15, 1938 in Permatang Rambai, Kepala Batas and had his early education at the Permatang Sintok Malay School in Kepala Batas (1946-1953). He then furthered his studies at the Sultan Idris Teachers Training College (now Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris) in Tanjung Malim, Perak (1955-1958).

image (1)He became a teacher from 1958 until 1977, with his last post as senior assistant at Sekolah Menengah Seri Muda, Penaga before entering politics. In June 1977, he was elected as Bertam state assemblyman and retained the seat for three terms following the general elections in 1982, 1986 and 1990. Present at his oath-taking today were Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his wife Betty Chew Gek Cheng, as well as state executive councillors.
