kedahALOR SETAR, April 9 – The Kedah branch of the Election Commission (EC) will open 633 polling centres statewide for the 13th general election (GE13).  Its director, Juhari Abd Rahman, said the polling centres would be opened in 588 schools, 15 kindergartens, nine community halls and 21 buildings in 15 parliamentary and 36 state constituencies, involving 2,040 channels.

He said there would be 26 polling centres in the parliamentary constituency of Langkawi, 32 in Jerlun, 42 in Kubang Pasu, 28 in Padang Terap, 51 in Pokok Sena, 42 in Alor Setar, 50 in Kuala Kedah and 43 in Pendang.

“There will be 49 polling centres in the Jerai parliamentary constituency, 29 in Sik, 41 in Merbok, 46 in Sungai Petani, 72 in Baling, 41 in Padang Serai and 41 in Kulim-Bandar Baharu,” he told reporters at his office at the federal government administrative complex here today.  He said the EC would also open 24 centres with 54 channels for the police and army personnel, as well as their spouses, who would be casting their votes earlier.

Juhari said based on the latest electoral roll, the total number of voters in the state stood at 1,043,281 voters, 1,026,334 of whom were ordinary voters, 155 overseas voters, 10,321 armed forces personnel and 6,471 police personnel.  He said 60 sets of nomination forms for the parliamentary and state seats had been sold by the EC to contesting parties.
A total of 18,329 EC staff would be involved in the general election in the state and the EC had received an allocation of more than RM7 million to carry out the whole election process.
