SINGAPORE — The Singapore Electoral Boundaries Review Committee recommended the adoption of 31 electoral divisions for the next General Election with a total of 93 Members of Parliament (MPs) to be returned.
Currently, there are 89 elected MPs.
The Committee said the division will comprise 14 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and 17 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs), it said in its White Paper released here today.
According to the Committee, the number of electors in the latest Registers of Electors as on April 15, 2019, was 2,594,740, which was an increase of 134,256 electors from 2,460,484 electors in the 2015 Registers of Electors certified on April 7, 2015.
Based on 89 elected MPs today, this works out to an average ratio of one MP to about 29,200 electors, it said.
With these proposed changes, the total number of MPs will increase to 93, comprising 14 from SMCs and 79 from GRCs.
The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee has submitted its report to the Prime Minister on March 11.
Meanwhile, Singapore’s Elections Department noted that the Government has accepted the recommendations and will implement them at the next General Election.
The department also announced that the updated Registers of Electors have been prepared and are open for public inspection from March 14 to 27.
