MICKUALA LUMPUR, May 20-  MIC central working committee (CWC) member senator Jaspal Singh has denied talk that the party is facing deregistration and said postponing party elections was not out of the ordinary.

There is no question about MIC is going to be de-registered. We are a fully democratic party that pays attention to regulations and take compliance very seriously.

“MIC successfully conducted its 2012 AGM on Dec 9, 2012. The AGM report and accounts was fully adopted by the assembly,” said Jaspal in a statement yesterday.

He said MIC was “not the only party to have postponed party elections” citing Umno and MCA as examples of parties that had done the same.

“I don’t understand why so much discussion and press statements are being made as if MIC is the only party to have postponed the party election, which was due last year.

“As a matter of fact, the postponement of party elections was first announced by Umno on Nov 30, 2010.

“MCA too made an announcement after its EGM on 14 March, 2011 to postpone the party election,” he said.

Jaspal said the CWC had discussed the matter and agreed to postpone party polls until after the 13th general election on May 5.

“We have just finished a very challenging election. MIC could have performed better but nevertheless our performance is commendable if compared to other component parties,” he added.

MIC won four parliamentary seats in the peninsula in the general election, compared to MCA’s seven and Gerakan’s one.
