KUALA LUMPUR, July 3 – MIC President Datuk Seri G. Palanivel wants the Education Ministry to ensure that Indian students get their 1,500 places for matriculation courses.

Palanivel, who is Natural Resources and Environment Minister, said if some Indian students had rejected their offer to enter matriculation colleges, others should be offered the places.

palani-micHe said in a statement that 6,150 students had applied for matriculation for the 2013/2014 intake and that only 892 of the 1,500 students offered places in the first intake had accepted the offer.

In the second intake, 350 students were offered places to further their studies.

“I have yet to be informed on the number of students who have accepted the offer from the second intake,” he added.

Palanivel said the MIC had sent in appeal letters to ensure that Indian students got their 1,500 places for matriculation.

Last week, in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the Barisan Nasional (BN) government had never cheated the people in terms of education.

Muhyiddin explained that the matriculation quota of 1,500 for Indian students had actually been used up during the academic sessions for this year and the previous year.
