India, which is experiencing rapid growth in the renewable energy sector, plans to add over 30 gigawatt of renewable energy to its energy mix in the next five years.

This was discussed at a bilateral meeting between New and Renewable Energy Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Princess Astrid of Belgium, who is currently visiting India as head of a Belgian economic mission to India.

Abdullah elaborated on the success of the wind programme and significant cost reductions in solar energy through the Jawahar Lal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM).

He also highlighted India’s investor friendly policy framework for promoting renewable energy in a big way.

Abdullah said India and Belgium have great potential for enhancing cooperation in promoting renewable energy, and offered to provide all possible assistance for that purpose.

The Belgian delegation recognised India’s considerable achievements and strengths in renewable energy and noted that India had made large strides in this field.
