New Delhi, Feb 21 – The government said Thursday it plans to convert 7,200 kilometres of roads in the states into national highways, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The decision was made following an approval by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), an official said after a meeting here.
With the latest plan, state highways converted into national highways during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) administration would reach about 17,000 km in length.
About 10,000 kilometres of state highways were declared national highways over the past 10 years.
The highways are spread across in states including Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as well as Leh and Laddakh regions.
India’s overall national highways stretch some 80,000 kilometres.
