The constituency has 23,301 Malay voters (38.3 per cent), 25,310 Chinese voters (41.9 per cent) and 11,468 Indian voters (19 per cent).

Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Mah Siew Keong faces DAP’s Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud in the by-election scheduled for Saturday.

One hundred and fifty voters or 36.5 per cent of the 410 early voters have cast their ballots in the Teluk Intan parliamentary by-election here until 10.30am today.

Election Commission (EC) Secretary Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said the early voting atmosphere was calm and he attributed the smooth running of the voting process to cooperation from the police.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the early voting at the Hilir Perak Police District Headquarters multipurpose hall here, he warned political parties against pitching tents as the EC would provide them with an office at every polling station on Saturday.

He said the setting of tents outside polling stations violated Section 26 (1) of the Election Offences Act as it could cause provocations among contending parties.
