SEGAMAT, March 11- Ten thousand Indian students from 90 secondary schools have been selected to participate in the My Future 1Malaysia programme aimed at overcoming social ill among youths. MIC Deputy President Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam(pic) said the six-month programme would involve 15 schools from Selangor, Johor (15), Negeri Sembilan (10), Perak (14), Kedah (9), Pahang (8), Penang (8), Melaka (6) and Kuala Lumpur (5).
Subramaniam said the programme was being organised by the Special Implementation Taskforce on the Indian Community under the Prime Minister’s Department with assistance from the Education Ministry and Police. Speaking to reporters after launching the programme at Felcra Tebing Tinggi Training and Recreation Centre, here, today, he said the initial programme involves students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Ahmad Arshad, Batu Anam in Segamat; Sekolah Menengah Raja Mahadi, Klang and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Mewah, in Bukit Mewah, Negeri Sembilan.“The programme will be expanded to other selected schools in stages for six months,” he said.
Subramaniam who is also Human Resource Minister said schools were selected based on the disciplinary records of Indian students.
“Most of the students who come from primary Tamil schools suffer a culture shock when they move on to secondary schools. Another contributing factor is their involvement with certain groups that are influential.
“The success of the programme will be gauged by the discipline shown by students who participate in the programme,” he said.
