ALGIERS, Algeria, March 22- Energy and Mining Minister Youcef Yousfi pledged on Thursday in the People’s National Assembly for a power-cut free summer through the production of additional 2,800 MW, which should cover the growing demand of electricity, Algeria’s Press Service (APS) reported.
The power outage to which Group Sonelgaz resorted in 2012, notably in the country’s south-east region and which caused a wave of protest in this region,
“will not happen again during this summer through these new capacities, which account for up 20 per cent in terms of production in comparison with the past year.” Group Sonelgaz is Algeria’s National Society for Electricity and Utility
in charge of electricity and natural gas distribution in the country.
The delay recorded in 2012 in the commissioning of two high pressure lines, namely Msila-Barika and Ain Djasser-Barika, undermined the supply of this whole region compelling the Operator to have recourse to “controlled” outage to avoid a black-out in all south-east region, notably Biskra, El Oued and Touggourt.
