KUALA LUMPUR – An independent speaker was detained today to help in the investigations into a video clip containing insults against the Hindu religion.
Acting Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador said the 34-year-old speaker was detained in Arau, Perlis.
“The suspect was detained for four days until May 1 to help in the investigations.
“The Royal Malaysia Police is also tracking down the owner of the Youtube account ‘Info Suspek Kelantan’, to help in the investigations,” he said in a statement tonight.
Abdul Hamid said as of today, 790 police reports had been lodged throughout the country on the video clip on Youtube which contained insulting statements of the Hindu religion.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing, etc disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will or prejudicing etc, the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (improper use of network facilities or network service, etc.
Members of the public are advised not to misuse the social media or other communications network to upload or share any type of provocation which could cause racial tension among the people of different religions and races int he country, he said.
The 57-minute video clip which contained insulting elements was uploaded by the Youtube account holder ‘Info Sunnah Kelantan’ on Dec 30 last year.
