MELAKA, April 3- The Melaka legislative assembly was dissolved today to enable the state election to be held simultaneously with the federal polls. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam(pic) announced the dissolution of the assembly at 1 pm after an audience with Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob to seek the latter’s consent.
He spoke to reporters after chairing the weekly meeting of the state executive council at the office of the chief minister, here. Meanwhile, the speaker of the last assembly, Datuk Wira Othman Mohamad, sent a notification on the dissolution to the Melaka Election Commission (EC) director Haelmy Mohd Hanifah.
The Barisan Nasional (BN) held five of the six parliamentary seats and 23 of the 28 seats in the last state assembly. The DAP held the remaining one parliamentary seat, namely Kota Melaka, and five state seats, namely Kesidang, Kota Laksamana, Banda Hilir, Bachang and Ayer Keroh. A total of 439,869 people in Melaka are eligible to vote in the coming election, 14,563 of them as postal voters.
