KUALA LUMPUR, April 9 – The ability and potential of women to be the pillar of the country’s administration have been deemed to be at par with the men’s, according to historian Prof Datuk Dr Ramlah Adam(pic). She said this was proven with the due recognition given to the women under the Barisan Nasional (BN) manifesto. Ramlah said women’s participation in the country’s administration should be given special attention as today’s women were more educated and prepared to take on responsibilities as policy makers at the national level.
“Women need this recognition and also the chance to earn more income so that they can help their families,” she told Bernama. As such, Ramlah, who is also the director of Universiti Malaysia Perlis Centre for Royal Institutional Studies, said she would like to call on all women to be more confident to go further.
Meanwhile, cluster head of History, Heritage and Socio-Cultural of National Professors’ Council Prof Datuk Dr Zainal Kling said the roles of women should be strengthened as they were independent and capable of creating the same success stories as the men. He said BN manifesto announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Saturday was deemed comprehensive, including the plans lined up with the aim of improving the women’s standard of living.
On women’s participation in current issues, Dr Zainal said they deserved to be given special attention as they were capable of becoming good leaders and contributing to the country’s economy. The BN manifesto for the 13th general election promised, among others, to provide more business opportunities and work-from-home incentives for women, as well as to increase the number of women involved as national policy-makers.
Besides, the manifesto themed ‘A Promise of Hope’, also promotes gender equality to maximise the potential of Malaysian people. The manifesto will also combat sexual harassment and abuse of women at home and working place, encourage the opening of 1Malaysia Child Nursery at all government offices, government-linked companies, as well as private companies.
