NEW DELHI — The number of people who tested positive for COVID-19 in India has increased by 1,684 within the past day, bringing the total number to 23,077, the Health Ministry said on Friday, adding that the death toll had reached 718 people.
According to Sputnik news agency, the previous reports indicated that India had 21,393 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 681 fatalities.
The biggest number of cases – 6,430 – have been registered in the central state of Maharashtra, followed by the western state of Gujarat with 2,624 cases and National Capital Territory of Delhi with 2,376 cases.
The World Health Organisation declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on March 11. To date, more than 2.7 million people have been infected with the coronavirus worldwide, with over 190,000 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.
