MUAR, April 28 – Urban issues top Barisan Nasional (BN) candidatefor the Maharani state seat Datuk Zulkhairi Ahmad’s agenda as he traverses his campaign trail.
He said Bandar Maharani, for which Muar was known in the old days, needed better traffic system to solve its perennial traffic congestion while hawker and petty trader premises needed to be reorganised.
“If possible we should regroup hawkers and petty traders into zones to enable them to conduct business in a conducive environment without having to fold and unfold their tables by the roadside.
“This will also avoid unhealthy competition for too many of them are concentrated in a few places, selling similar products,” he told Bernama.
Zulkhairi, 48, who hailed from Parit Jawa, said Muar should live up to its status as the Johor’s royal town by upgrading its infrastructure, amenities, street lighting, drainage system and surau while the roads needed to be resurfaced.
On youth employment, Zulkhairi, who is GGSB Synergy Sdn. Bhd director, said he wanted local employers to give preference to locals and not to be over dependent on foreign workers.
Despite being a newcomer, Zulkhairi, who is facing PAS’ Mohamad Taslim in a straight fight in the May 5 polls, said he had been meeting needy people in his capacity as Muar Umno Divison Welfare and Social Bureau chairman since 2008.
Zulkhairi is unperturbed with the ‘unknown quantity’ label in his quest to redeem the BN’s honour by wresting the seat from PAS who won by a 158-vote majority in 2008.
