GEORGE TOWN, April 30 – DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang has admitted having a tough time contesting in Gelang Patah in Johor because the parliamenary seat is a Barisan Nasional (BN) stronghold.
He said that among the factors making it difficult to win the seat were the big guns that the BN had sent there to campaign and former prime minister Datuk Seri Mahathir Mohamad’s strong influence.
Lim is pitting against Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Abdul Ghani Othman for the seat in the Sunday polls.
“In 2008, the BN won with a majority of about 9,000 votes. In 2004, the BN MCA won with a 31,666-vote majority,” Lim said at a ceramah at Han Chiang College here last night.
“This is the first time that Johor is the focus of the whole country. What happens in Johor can influence what happens in Malaysia,” he added. The Gelang Patah seat was won by the BN’s Tan Ah Heng who defeated PKR’s Zaliha Mustafa with a 8,851-vote majority in 2008.
