Ali RustamMELAKA, May 30- The Melaka state government will create a State Economic Consultative Council (SECC) to be chaired by former chief minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam in an effort to boost the economic performance of the state.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said the initiative was to replace the functions of the State Economic Action Council (SEAC) previously.

He said between seven and 20 individuals would be appointed as members of the SECC comprising former state government leaders and economic experts.

“Among the functions of the SECC board members will be to discuss whatever mega economic programmes to be implemented in the state and subsequently to channel the inputs to the state government which will decide whether to implement the projects or otherwise,” he told reporters after chairing the State Executive Council meeting, here today.

Commenting further on the appointment of Mohd Ali as SECC chairman, he said it was appropriate based on his success in developing the state economy especially in the tourism sector during his tenure as the 9th Melaka chief minister earlier.

On another development, Idris said the state government would apply to register the Ayer Keroh Country Club (AKCC) as another World Heritage site in the state.

He said the initiative was being made following the visit by the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultutal Organisation (Unesco), Dr Irina Bokova to Melaka last week.

In 2008, Melaka was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage City incorporating the Historical Zone in Bandar Hilir and Jonker Walk here.
