RAMASAMYPETALING JAYA, JUNE 4- Residents of Kampung Sungai Toh Pawang are now hoping that the government of the day will to look into their housing pleas as they had been promised houses twelve years back.

According to the village head, Palani Marimuthu, approximately ten to twelve years back, the government took the land for development which was then under the BN government. Kampung Sungai Toh Pawang is situated in Bedong, a small town in the north of Sungai Petani, Kedah. The constituents are mostly farmers and rubber tappers.

“Some of the eligible Indians and Malays were promised houses and when BN collapsed in the 2008 election, the development had been put on hold.”

“Some of the them bought places in the outskirts and moved out to their own homes. We are just hoping that the government of the day will look into our plight,” said Palani.

Deputy Chief Minister of Penang, P. Ramasamy, claims that the BN government had neglected the people and the state will not be able to do anything on this as the land belongs to the Federal government.

During the 2008 election, MIC made the promise for the development of this place. Is this called Janji Ditepati (Delivered Promised)?” asked Ramasamy.

“The promises were made by V. Saravanan who was then the bureau chief in Kedah. If it can’t be delivered, why then make such promises to the people?”

The state assemblyman for Prai also hopes that this will be soon looked into by the Kedah’s present administration.

The current Kedah government promised to review the housing policy made by the previous administration including the housing quota and land swapping status.

“The present administration would also conduct a probe to identify the cause of the delays as well as come up with an amicable solution to revive the projects,” said a source who  did not want to be identified.

However, S. Manikumar, denied any knowledge of this issue while Pakatan was in power in Kedah, as the villagers brought up this issue again after the  election.

“They did not come directly to us, however, we did form a working committee to look into housing and development issue under Hj Amirruddin Hj Hamzah, our state exco.”

“We allocated lands and houses in the outskirts and did approve land titles for those who came to seek us, said Manikumar.
