Kuala lumpur, June 13 – Myanmar Airways International (MAI) is offering tickets at half price to Myanmarese who want to return home from Malaysia following the clashes among them at the Selayang wholesale market and Kampung Baru Ampang recently.
Under the initiative, they need to pay only RM210 per person for a one-way ticket home, compared to the usual price of RM420, said a MAI Reservation, Ticketing and Administration Officer, who wished to be known only as Shien.
She told Bernama, this was in line with the Myanmar government announcement recently, and the initiative was valid for one month from today until 12th July.
She said the Myanmar government came up with the initiative following its concern that some of its citizens were hurt in the fighting incidents and wanted to return home.
“This initiative also takes into account those who could not afford the expensive tickets but wanted to return back to their homeland,” she added.
Since early this month, several fights had been reported at the Selayang Wholesale market and Kampung Baru Ampang among the Myanmarese here due to the Muslim-Buddhist religious conflict that occurred in their homeland, with three Myanmar men reported killed in the fights.
Last week, Kuala Lumpur Deputy Police Chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh warned Myanmar nationals residing in Malaysia not to create tension due to the political affiliation in their country of origin that could jeopardise national security here.
As a preventive measure, the police have collected information from 400 Myanmar nationals who work in the Klang Valley including at the market, to be stored in the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) database system for easy detection if they are involved in any crime in this country.
