KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 – Former Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman has been appointed as the new Chairman and Director of Sime Darby Bhd effective July 1, replacing acting Chairman Tan Sri Samsudin Omar.
Abdul Ghani, 66, will serve as an Independent and Non-Executive Director of Sime Darby while Samsudin has been redesignated as Non-Independent and Non-Executive Director of Sime Darby, the conglomerate said in a statement today.
“Abdul Ghani was appointed Minister of Youth and Sports in December 1993 untill March 1995 when he became the Johor Mentri Besar until May 2013,” it said.
Samsudin was appointed acting Chairman of Sime Darby following the retirement of Tun Musa Hitam as Chairman at the annual general meeting held on Nov 8, 2012.
Sime Darby President and Group Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh welcomed Abdul Ghani’s appointment, saying it would augur well for the multinational group.
“Sime Darby is honoured to have him on board and we are confident he would help contribute towards efforts to steer the company to greater heights and through challenging times ahead,” he said.
