KUALA LUMPUR, June 27- It will be an uphill battle for the opposition if it were to join the fray in the probable Kuala Besut state by-election, the first by-election after 13th general election (GE13).

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who admitted this, said this was due to a big majority garnered by the Barisan Nasional (BN) in GE13.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Kuala Besut assemblyman Dr A.Rahman Mokhtar, 55, at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital at 10.18am this morning.

“The Kuala Besut state seat is really critical and challenging as the BN obtained quite a big majority. As PAS also has a big support in the constituency, we will nominate a PAS candidate.

“PAS will meet soon to decide the candidate,” he told reporters at Parliament here today.Anwar Ibrahim

A. Rahman of BN retained the seat with a 2,434-vote majority to beat Napisah Ismail of PAS in GE13 on May 5.

Terengganu State Legislative Assembly Speaker Mohd Zubir Embong will be sending a letter on the vacancy of the Kuala Besut state seat to the Election Commission (EC) tomorrow to pave the way for a by-election for the constituency.

The EC will hold a special meeting to set the date for a by-election for the Kuala Besut state seat.
