PETALING JAYA, JUNE 28- The High Court judge who delivered a damning verdict against the police and the Inspector General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar two days ago has opted for an optional retirement.
Justice VT Singham, who turns 65 today, tendered his application for optional retirement recently, legal sources told FMT.
His move comes just two days after he delivered a judgment against the IGP and the police over the death of detainee A Kugan three years ago.
Singham, a publicity-shy bachelor, is the most senior High Court judge. He was a private practitioner before he was appointed Judicial Commissioner in 2003.
“But his departure has nothing to do with the case. He has sacrificed his whole career for the legal fraternity and the judiciary. He wants to take a break.
“I can assure you this has nothing to the decision he delivered a few days ago. That decision could however be his last as a High Court judge,” said the source.
