July 12 – In an attempt to strengthen his political base, MIC President Dato Seri G.Palanivel has removed S.Ananthan as the MIC Kedah State Chairman, MIC sources said.
Palanivel himself has taken over the position as the Kedah State Chairman.
Ananthan is seen as a close confidante of former party president Dato Seri S.Samy Vellu, who is said to be spearheading a challenge against Palanivel.
Amidst speculations that Dr Subramaniam might contest for Presidency, Palanivel has embarked on a mission to shore up his support base in the party by changing several State Chairmen, who are seen as key players in the party’s political system.
Palanivel has already changed the State Chairmen of Melaka, Perak, Penang and Pahang. He has also removed 3 Central Working Committee members who are aligned to the former President S.Samy Vellu.
Palanivel may hand over the Kedah Chairmanship to a local leader at a later date. Two candidates who are likely to be considered are lawyer Dato S.Ganesan and M.L.Maran who stood as a state assembly candidate for Kedah in the 13th general election.
