GEORGE TOWN, July 15 – The DAP’s call for the attorney-general to intervene in the Islamic administrative affairs of Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Sarawak is seemingly an affront to the Malay Rulers, charged the Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma).

Kimma president Senator Datuk Syed Ibrahim Kader (photo) said the remark by DAP assistant treasurer Nga Kor Ming had exceeded the limits because the Taiping MP was interfering in the affairs of Muslims.

KIMMA“Why must a non-Muslim interfere in the affairs of Muslims? Give Muslims the liberty to make decisions,” he told reporters after presenting aid to poor families in conjunction with the Ramadan fasting month, here, last night.

At a news conference in the lobby of Parliament on July 11, Nga urged the state governments in Kedah, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Sarawak to amend their Islamic religious administrative enactments which allow the religion of a child to be determined with the consent of only one parent, similar to the bill that was withdrawn after it was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat.

Nga called on the attorney-general to advise the respective states to amend the enactment to bring it in line with the Federal Constitution.

Syed Ibrahim said Nga’s call had exceeded the limits because Muslims did not coerce non-Muslims to embrace Islam.

“Whoever wishes to embrace Islam can do so voluntarily through discussion and dialogue. The call is seemingly an affront to the Malay Rulers,” he said.
